I just realized the elder sister Maggie is an enigma. Finn tells her that Seth is interested yet Maggie doesn't confirm her younger sister's age with her live-in boyfriend's brother?? Especially when Seth is a guest in Maggie's home....🤔. And she tells Finn that Shirley will easily grant permission for a date despite Seth's age and relation? And then later Maggie refuses to assist Finn in defying the parents...well that one is more easily understood since Maggie is an adult and Finn is a high school adolescent.....also Maggie is concerned about rebuilding her own relationship with Ted and Shirley! The author may have been conveying the idea that the people we love don't always react in the manner one expects.....
Occasionally Finn is also less than honest. Shirley stated clearly that she forbids her to visit Maggie when Seth is present. Yet Finn states to Seth: "My parents didn't say anything! They cannot forbid me to see my own sister!" Hmm...I believe that your mother did precisely that. At sixteen best friend Vida is a year older than Finn and presented as both a trustworthy companion and good foil. Vida actively discourages Finn from pursuing Seth, mainly because she wants her best friend to date boyfriend Paul's buddy Jerry. "We could have so much fun double dating!" The way Vida describes her and Paul's sexual relationship it sounds like another chore! This probably reinforces Finn's decision to delay full sexual activity; a stand upon which the book's heroine is adamant! Finn does wonder during private moments if she should have "done it".....but then promptly recommits herself to her decision of waiting. I wholly approve since I believe in virginity through high school and up to age eighteen! Note Maggie does not mention any specific sexual details to Finn. This indicates at twenty years of age she is old enough...The text does not mention the age of live-in boyfriend Jim. He is a medical school so he must be at least twenty-one. Seth is nineteen so he is also old enough. He wonders during one scene why the hell he "fell for a fifteen-year-old girl".....At the end of the story both main characters have had recent birthdays. Maybe when Seth visits at Christmas Finn will be ready. Maybe Finn will have another partner by then. Maybe Seth will. Maybe one of these young people will actually mention birth control! 🫨As The World Turns....
